8 foot perimeter ditch for home defense

Digging an 8 foot deep (15 ft wide) perimeter ditch for home defense may be a bit extreme to keep the burglars out of your house. But adding a 4 ft wall on each side of the ditch would make it very difficult for criminals to enter your property, if the only entry point was a drawbridge. You would create a vertical escarpment of 12 ft.

But there could be legal dangers: the ditch might qualify as a man trap, if a criminal was unlucky and hurt himself while trying to intrude on your property at night and jumped over the first wall, directly into the ditch. Maybe a wall of thorn bushes would be better.

Flood the ditch and put in alligators. If someone falls in, there will be no evidence.

The best and cheapest thing to do is get a good security system, unless you are the militia type and don't care about resale.

My home alarm and security system is a full grown German Shepherd that lives in the house, a loaded hideout weapon in every room, and a half-senile Nam combat vet lurking in the shadows. (They took my frags and claymores away, tho.) LOL
