I have an old cottage style house and I am replacing the cedar siding with new boards.I have stripped the walls completely and have repapered everything. My question is how do I start the siding, and how do I finish the corners? Thanks for any help you can give me.Great site!

Start the siding about an inch or so below the sill plate of the house. (Over the concrete foundation) Remember to think like water, and make sure you start so water is directed down past any possible entry into your house. Put it on level.

Corners can be dealt with in a few ways. You could miter them so they match the boards on the other side of the corner, or, easier but with a different 'look'; take a (eg) 1x3 and a 1x4 and nail these on the corner (vertically up to the soffit) before you start siding. Then just butt your siding into them. (The reason for the different sizes (1x3, 1x4) is so that when it''s on, the 1x4 will lap the corner and both will look the same size.
