42" deck rail height required in N.C.?

The last time I built a deck, the code in North Carolina was 36" minimum height for deck rail (a.k.a. guard). Just took a look at the 2009 IBC with 2012 N.C. amendments and Section 1013 on Guards says 42" minimum height.

Did N.C. up it from 36 to 42 inches? I hope not. I just built an extension to my deck with the same guard rail height as the old section, 38 inches.

42" deck rail

I sure hope that NC regs didn't change the height on railings or I'm going to be in the same boat as you are since I made all of my 36" off of the deck floor. I'm also located in NC. :(

locally handrails must be a minimum of 36" when the landing or deck is below 6' high. onces its at or above 6' it now has to be 42"

Thanks Pianolady. I forgot to check the residential code in addition to the building code. Never could figure why they are not one in the same.
