4 by 4 in exterior wall of home

In doing some drywall repairs on a bedroom wall around the window , I found a 4 by 4 post that has some serious damage (rotten through about 70%) at about the midway point. Can someone tell me how serious this is, is there a danger to the roof integrity?

How about a picture.
#1 Find out why it rotted.
Is it really rot or insect infestation?
And yes it's most likly going to have to be replaced.
