3 Yr Old Mortar, Flaking Badly

Hello All,

I had a large brick stairway on the side of my house torn off and totally rebuilt in October of '05. The top landing is about 8'x8' and the mortar in between the bricks is flaking out and crumbling, and then washing away in the rain. I'd say that it is well over an inch deep now between the bricks.

Is that normal wear and tear for three year old brickwork? I am in NH, we do get pretty bad winters, but the mason who did the work is from here, he should know that too, right?

Just wondering if I ought to get a hold of the mason who did the work and ask him to fix it.

Thanks!

I would call the mason and find out his opinion and what mortar/grout materials he used.

I would also think backe to recall if you use a deicer and what type it was.
