24 foot span


i am planning to build 24x32 garage, how do i install 24 ft ceiling joist? can they be spliced? any suggestions appreciated thanks judesson

That would typically be a truss design to achieve the 24' free span, typically by a designer or architect.

Pre-made trusses is the way to go with something like this. They will come engineered for your local snow and wind load.

If you want to build it yourself, do the research (look up the span tables and codes) or hire someone who knows their stuff.

at 24' (make it 26' with the eaves), if you want open storage above, engineered wood I-beams are almost mandatory, but the price will add up quick. another option would be a steel 32' I-beam running the length with a post or three in the middle. That way you only have to span 12'. that would let you buy 14' lumber and have a generous eaves overhanging.

You buy 24' joists that are properly sized by an architect or engineer. Or you can use trusses that are designed by an architect or engineer.
