1st mud job

This is my 1st time mudding. I have some pieces about 12" tall from the floor x 30" lg horizontal. What I'm wondering is, do the seams that are horizontal need to have solid backing? I screwed the new pieces to the exsisting studs (vertical) leaving a gap (about 16" lg.) should I take the new pieces down and nail in new studs for a solid backing or will it be ok to mud?

You will be fine as long as your vertical seam ends on a stud. So a vertical stud at 0", 16", and 30"...
