wiring for welder plug

Hi,
I'm installing a small welder (230 v, 50 amp) in the garage and I'm not sure about the wiring for the plug-in.
The power supply was formerly used for an electric range. It was a four-prong receptacle with black, red, white, and ground wire. The new receptacle for the welder is a three prong. Which color wire goes where?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

The white will not be used for your welder rec. Put the blacks on X and Y, put the ground on the green or G. Have a ball.

Thanks Mdshunk,
Sorry, but I don't understand.
You said blacks. I have only one black wire.

Okay, black on X, red on Y, ground on G or green. White will be unused.
