Question

Wiring surprise

I have a small HVAC duct in my utility room and I opened up the vent only to find an electrical wire running thru the duct (it actually is coming from the panel). This is an older home (early 60's). My question is, is this OK? And is this up to code?

Wiring surprise

It’s not surprising to find your situation in older homes like yours. I don’t know what the code was back in the ‘60’s, but today it wouldn’t be allowed unless the cable was plenum rated. Common cables used today for houses aren’t plenum rated.
You can remove the cable and re-route it around the ductwork, using junction box(es) and appropriate fittings if necessary.
