wiring in line light switch on power cord

the power switch for my lathe went out and i want to put an outdoor light switch in its place. there is a black, white, and green leading from the male plug and the same leading to the motor. how would i wire them with the switch? the switch has 2 terminals on one side as well as the ground.

Connect the two white wires (neutral) to each other only.

Connect the black wires (hot) one to each of the switch side terminals.

Connect the two green wires (ground) to each other and also run a short length of wire from the green wire junction to the green (end) terminal on the switch.

thought so

that is what i thought but the guy at the local hardware store where i got the switch said to put both whites to one terminal, both blacks to the other terminal and the greens together. i did that and as soon as i plugged it in it popped, turned the prongs black and tripped the breaker.

You mentioned that this is a lath(e) (sp), and that it has black/white/green wires which indicates that it is 110 volts. Please make sure that your new switch is rated for the motor amperage or higher than motor amperage. Listen to Allen, not the hardware man. Allen will be here next week, the hardware man may not be there next week. Good Luck, David
