Wiring light backwards

If the hot wire is wired to the white of a light fixture and the neutral is wired to the black of the light fixture, won't it still operate? Other than not to code and possibly electrocuting the next guy that works on the light, what else could it cause?
Years ago, an electrician wired one of my exhause fans backward, but he discovered the error when he turned it on.

The shell of the lamholder will be hot rather than the center contact as it should be. What did turning on the fan have to do with discovering that it was miswired? It still would work and in the same direction regardless of how it was wired unless it was a 3 phase motor.

Thanks for the post.
As I remember about the fan, I think it was discovered because it was operating but with a loud humming sound.
