Wiring a Light

I am installing a light in my basement and need some help on the installation. I know that all splices have to take place inside a box however I need to attach the light to a wood beam running down the middle of the basement. I can not put a box in the wood however I can put the box above the wood and drill a hole through the beam for the wires to run in. I guess as long as the wires from my fixture are long enough to go through the hole in the beam and be spliced in the box I am ok, just need some advice on this. Attached is a pic of what I hope to do.

Pan box screwed to the bottom of the beam. Then cut the trim around the pan box.

Hole though the beam is not acceptable. Also box needs to be accessible. Are you planning an access door for it?
Pancake box mounted to the bottom of the beam is what you need.
