wiring garage

I ran wires in pvc underground out to the garage. We just ran 2 hots for 220 and grounded at the garage with 2 ground rods.Somone said if the run is over x amount of feet the ground wire should run back to the original source. This will probably never happen since the trench was filled in years ago.Is this safe, also read that romex can`t be run in pvc cause moisture deterierates the nylon or something.I though at the time it was safer than just burrying outdoor wire without a hard covering. Please let me know the cons and hopefully pros of doing it the way we did or do I need to dig it up and start over.

wiring garage

Is there a sub-panel at the garage? Can you get a picture of it? Was this UF wire?
