Wiring a five wire ceiling fan

My old ceiling fan had five wires and the new ceiling fan only has four wires. How do I wire the new ceiling fan? What happens to the extra
wire?
Thanks, Don

Can you tell us what five wire and a four wire ceiling fan are??
Your description really gives us nothing to go on.

Maybe add some descriptions such as wire color, or even better some photos....

My old ceiling fan has five wires.... Black, white, blue and grey plus the green ground wire. My new ceiling fan has only Black, white and blue plus the green ground.

Thanks, Don

I am guessing two hots, one common neutral for the lights & fan, and a ground for the new one. If you have 12/3 or 14/3 up there for the box that the fan goes in, you need to figure out if Red or black is the light or fan. Check at the switch if unsure, since if you have already taken down the old unit and not labeled the wires, you are going to have to go to the switch to figure out.

If you do what we did, and your fan did not come with a remote control for the light & fan, I would highly suggest installing one, vs. the switch on the wall to control both. Makes it easy when wanting to flip on the light or fan from your seat. You can also get the remote controls, that use a smartphone app for a android or iPhone.

BTW, the instruction sheet that came with the fan, if you purchased it new, would tell you what is what for wire jacket color.

Black goes to the incoming constant hot black as does blue (light) if your only using pull chains , white then goes to incoming white from supply and green ground to bare ground or whatever is ground on the supply.

The above changes if you have wall switches that control the lights and fan ... lets know what you have.
