Seriously, $3300? Premium time? what the heh?
Premium was under the exclusions section. Does he have to open a wall to install conduit and is that where the additional for carpentry comes into play. The best thing you can do is get a quote from someone else and dont tell them what the previous quote was.

I just want to fix it right at this point in time. If the deals falls through then so be it. My ex knew how do pipe. He did it to his work shop but he didn't do it in the supended ceiling area. Now, I'm left holding the bag. All for 8 lights....

Okay, getting my posts up. To Greg's point, I checked out a few forums. This will be a handy site for me if I ever buy another home or fixer-upper. I'm afraid I can't offer much advice but will probably use this place to ask for some.

EIGHT?? Only eight lights???
Yes, $3300 is stupidly over priced. The contractor knows the situation and is taking advantage of it.

Mike, if you live close by I'd have you over in a heart beat to look at it. I'm west of Randall Road near the Best Buys - just north of the St. Charles border.

Not sure if he has to open a wall. There is rough hewn cedar paneling on the wall by the fuse box. I guess I could go down to basement and take a photograph and post it. But yes, he might have to open it up but at least it's not dry wall in that area.

Photo the fuse box area and surrounding area. Not sure if I uploaded this photo right.

Looks like he has to get into the wall to pipe into the switch. He may get lucky and be able to just pull the cedar panel off. His price seems high if you break it down per fuxture.

If he can go through the top, there's only few inches up there to remove but I have no idea.

Actually, only 6 lights (it's a half basement), unless he's counting a few lights for the work shop area (that have flourescent type hanging lights). Think I'll take those lights with me since they are hanging on small chains.

I just want to thank everyone who replied and especially to Mike.

Mike it was pleasure to meet you in person - thanks for stopping by to check things out and for the contacts. I called one after you left.

I'll post once I get a new quote and hopefully a happy ending to this thread.

You all rock! And for my next home when projects begin, Mike, you're hired (it won't be in South Elgin).

Thank you!!

The switch box wiring will be a royal pain to rewire---the rest is not bad-- Let's see how this turns out.

It was a pleasure to actually see one of these up close--I have a job going two streets north of this home.

Greenfield whips are allowed inside walls,in existing walls--so I will be curious how the electricians decide to deal with the switch wiring----Mike---

Nice people hang out here----it's great to be able to meet a member----

Mike when you were there do you recall how much room between the ceiling tile to the floor joints ??

Merci,
Marc

About 3"---Big house with lots of conduit---might be possible to pull new wires into existing J-boxes near the lights--saving the trouble of getting a new conduit into the breaker box--

Biggest problem will be the switch box---installer drilled holes to small for BX or conduit---that will be the part of the job that separates the men from the boys----
