Wiring code for South Elgin, Illinois

One of my customers in Geneva used an electrician that had a cheaper price than my electrician--

He did a fast and professional job---Get your post count up to 20 and PM me --I'll see if I have his number---Mike---

(I won't work in South Elgin because of the building department there)

Since my "ex" did the work, I'll probably have permit issues! He was anal about his work but goofed this one up big time. Thanks, Gregzoll for the answer. Yes, the work was done in 2002 but it appears I'll still have issuses.

I need to get my posts up to 20 so Mike can help me out with a local contact. So post aways folks.

And, yes, Mike, the people in the building department are more than difficult.
God forbid the man wants to turn a profit. Many homeowners fail to realize what it costs to run a legit company.

Dierte: I don't mind people making a profit but he uses words in his quote that lead me suspect his quote like, "ask for more money for carpentry work"....

Seriously, $3300? Premium time? what the heh?

Existing installation work is typically only required to comply with the Code in force at the time of original installation. Just because it does not comply with current Code does not mean it has to be changed. South Elgin could have other issues.
The price and details sound fishy and like a scam to get money out of you. As others have stated your only definitive answers will come from the SE building department or an electrician that regularly works in SE and pulls permits for that work.
You should also consider having your own electrician assess conditions as a rebuttal.

That price sounds very high for a basement with a drop ceiling---very---

The 'electrician' might be buddies with the buyer--

We will know what's up when a different electrician takes a look.

Mike: I agree with you. Not sure that they are buddies but the buyers are cops (police officers)! Sheesh. I will need my own electrician.

Looking for the introductions link - so you can pm me.

Start asking in the various forums, or responding to topics of subjects you know that can help others, such as the off topic forum. We can get your post count up there.

Sad thing is Basil, majority of the buyers want the seller to remodel the home, etc.. But code stuff is the stuff that can kill the deal.

In today's market, the buyers want everything and due to the glut of homes out there they can get it. Unfortuneatly, my ex didn't do what he should have done and he was union so he should have known better.

Don't forget that this can be a negotiated item. You don't have to do anything, a partial credit etc, but may not sell either. The buyers need to remember they are buying a used house. It will not have all the same features as a new custom built house. They should not expect airbags in a 72 Pinto.

I don't know if the NM was ever a legal wiring method in your area, so the problem could have existed from day one.

Dierte, normally I'd have the same exact attitude as you, but on this one? Come on!

That dude's quote would be mine, IF the job took a FULL week for me alone. Almost three full days with a qualified additional guy.
If a guy in Chi can't re-wire 20-something can lights in two days he is an amateur with no pipe bending skills.

Thing is, home centers are partly to blame. They'll tell folks anything they want, or give advice that is so far off base it's not funny.

WHY does HD in of Chicago have pallets of romex on the floor?????

Jim--this area is a mess---what I can do in the county is different than what my next door neighbor can do in the village---Many electricians around here only use conduit ,even where NM is allowed--

My house is all conduit--and NM is allowed--I doubt if I live 2 miles from this member.
