Wiring a Ceiling Fan to an Existing Switch, Help

Yesterday I installed the ceiling box, and ran the romex up the wall, went into the attic, ran it over to the box

After I finished putting the fan together, I went to wire it into the existing switch, only to realize their is NO NEUTRAL inside the switch box.... what do I do now?

what did the switch go to before? was there a ceiling light there? if there was, the power fed the light then ran down to the switch in which case there wouldn't be a neutral.

Did the switch originally have only 2 wires (white and black)?

Did it control something else, such as a wall outlet?

If the answers to both of these are "yes" then it's a simple fix.

But we have to know how it was configured first, before offering a remedy.

Wiring a Ceiling Fan to an Existing Switch, Help

The switch originally controlled one outlet in my living room, 2 outlets on my porch, and the ceiling fan on my porch.

I know the circuit has been modified, after removing the wood paneling on the walls I found that they had busted trenches in the plaster to run wires.

I took and put the 2 existing black wires together on one side of the switch, that made the outlets and the porch fan constant hot, on the other side of the switch I connected the new black wire I have running to my new living room fan.

Then I ran a neutral over through the wall from an existing outlet and tied that together with the new white wire running to my fan. That didn't work......

where does the power feed from? if it fed to the switch box there should have been a neutral there unless they were backfeeding it from one of the outlets or the porch fan. where you ran the new wire is there a neutral in that box? run a 3 wire from the switch box and pick up a neutral there.

turns out its wired backwards, their was no power coming into the switch, they ran a neutral to the switch for some reason, i ended up splicing into the hot side of the switch for my porch light in the same box, and ran power that way, thanks to all for the help
