Wiring For an A/C Unit

What size wire and what size/type of breaker should be feeding a 2 1/2 ton a/c unit?

Look at the nameplate rating on the unit to be sure. I have a 2.5 ton and it takes a 30 amp circuit and #10 wire.

Thanks

Is it safe to say that you should use:

14 gage wire for 15 amp curcuit
12 gage wire for 20 amp
10 gage wire for 30 amp?

The wire sizing rules for air conditioning compressors are different than regular branch circuits. Check the nameplate for the minimum circuit ampacity for the wire size and the maximum overcurrent protection to size the breaker.

This topic was recently discussed over here...
A/C Electrical

That should help you determine the correct wire size, and as teamo pointed out, you have to start with what is on the side of the A/C unit rather than based on generic size of the unit.

I will just read the data panel on the unit. Thanks all.
