Question

Wiring asmoke detector

Hey folks can anyone answer this for me? I am putting in a wired /battery smoke alarm but the best place for me to put it I can only get power from a light switch. The switch only has the 2 wires going to it. The top 1 is hot when the switch is off. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you dont have a Grounded conductor(neutral) at the switch. It wont work to power the smoke detector.

You didnt say how many wires are in the switch box and their colors.

Sorry I'm new at this chatroom thing. There are only 2 wires in the switch box Also this is an older house and the wires are not colored they are the old cloth covered ones. And if you have not guess I'm not an electrician.

Then you do not have a grounded conductor ( neutral ) to make your smoke detector work.

Your line or feed would be up at the light.

Why no attic?

You could take the light down lift the box out and fish a wire over to a possible spot. If you messed the plaster up you could ge a medalion that would cover the hole then you mount the light back.
