Wiring around screw terminals

So this is a basic question: Which direction should you "loop" the wire around screw terminals on switches and plugs? Is there a right answer? Is it covered in the code?

The reason I ask is because I have been told both directions for seemingly valid reasons:

Counterclockwise justification: Wrap the wire counterclockwise so that if you try to pull the wire out it will tighten the screw and make it hold better. Wraping the other direction will cause the screw to loosen if the wire gets pulled and release the wire.

Clockwise justification: Wrap the wire clockwise so that when you tighten the screw it acts to tighen the wire in. Wraping the other direction tends to force the wire out as it is tightened.

Wrap the wire clockwise so the wire is pulled into the screw as you tighten. It is in Article 110 of the NEC
