wiring

I want to wire a Leviton programmable timer to my outdoor lights. The Leviton has a black, red, white, orange (for 3 way) and green wire. The box has one black, one white and one ground wire. I am ignoring the orange wire since there is only one switch controling the lights. I have wired the timer green to the ground and the whites together. What to do with the black and red from the timer and the black at the box?

It will not work, if there is a "Switch Leg". You need a Neutral, which would mean having four wires, not just three, so that you can use the timer. If you can pull 14/3, that would allow you to use the timer.

: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

THX. I had put the timer red and black together with the line black and was able to program it but I couldn't get the lights to turn on when I pushed the bypass. Now I know why!
