Wired Smoke Detectors?

I have a couple questions regarding hard wired smoke detectors:

1) Can different brands of SDs be linked? I'm not sure what brand I have now throughout my house, but I am doing a basement remodel and the detectors at the local supply stores are either Kidde and Firex (?).

Also any general recommendations would be appreciated.

2) It seems that a smoke detector was not installed -- as it was supposed to be per code in my city -- in the basement level of our new home. (It did had livable/finished sq. footage when we moved in).

Am I required to interlink the new SDs I'm installing in the remodel to those on the 1st floor? If so, any tips?

Linkable smoke detectors are local code, may or may not have to. Did I catch that this was a new house??? if it is, you need to take it up with your builder, if not, if a home inspection was done prior to the sale, you need to take it up with the home inspector.

And as a rule, no, you cannot mix brands of smoke detectors.
