wire connection

Has anyone ever seen a #12 coming in to main panel box and both neutral an black coming in to hot side ,breakers are seperated by other ones, is on 2 different tandom circuits 20 amps. .I know white should be neutral but unsure on this set up.
Any info is appreciated.
In pic the 2 red 20 amps breakers at left bottom are the ones spoken on
.they both are on bottom of each tandom..many pics show them in breaker, one shows them out.wire connection-imag0549-2.jpg

I can't tell: are both thee white and black wire coming from the same cable (where they enter the box)?

Is this a Cutler Hammer Panel?

Hidden.... I asume they are on different phase and 240. Can you confirm with a multi-meter.?

Don't know if you can trace them, but are they in the same cable/romex.?

Are the circurs labeled in any manner.?

Do you have any electric baseboard heat in the house?

(Very tentative.... just wondering/guessing if someone highjacked/used the 12/2 to install baseboard 240 heater.)

that is a twin breaker ... so only 1 phase .. but defenatley needs to be traced as somwone said to find out what wire it is coming in and its purpose ... it may be a splice/jumper not maked ...

Philly.... Just curious... I'm a GC and only work very limited electrical (mine, 2 kids basically)....

but are there not some boards that take a tandem/twin off both phases..... could swear I've seen the breakers with handle ties on them in the parts sections .... (for MWBC or 240)...maybe not... I'm older and that happens.

Thanks

Peter

zinsco,ge,grouse-hinds use the thin tandem looking 240 breakers.what you have philly is called a quad tandem.sq-d amd others use those.i think what mtn remodel is refering to is just a tandem type/style.

I will trace them but both black and white wire are on same line coming in to box.basic 12/2 . One goes to the top tandom . And the other to a different tandom 2 spots below it and are not joined .2 seperate 20 on each one.they each have another seperate hot ,not joined ,on other circuit in tandom breaker, can individually turn off an on all 4 breakers. No baseboard heat and is crouse hinds box, uses Siemens breakers and at bottom had older style ,now removed.wire connection-imag0497.jpg

Sounds like someone tried to make a 240 work off of two different breakers so both legs were used. This could leave one leg hot while the other was turned off. A 2 pole breaker should have been used.

What? It looks to me like the Black is on one/half of the tandem, while the white is on the other half, making them be on the same phase!?

And I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean in the rest of the statement.
