Wind Turbine for Garage Power?

Hi all. I need to get electricity out to my garage. It's a detached garage and I've already had an estimate to get wires ran from my house to the garage, underground, and it was around $1025.

I was thinking about mounting a wind turbine on the peak of my garage roof and using that instead to power my garage and everything in it. Has anyone ever done this or do you know if it's a good idea? Thanks!

Jesse

it would be great to power your garage with wind! (or solar)

i have built with solar power but not wind. both generate DC voltage so you would need an inverter. generator and inverter would be at least $800 for each (maybe their are small marine systems, i don't know). you would need a battery bank to store energy for non windy times.... not cheap either.

good luck

Well, scratch that idea. Looks like I'll be burning coal. Thanks!

What kind of power do you need out there? Are you just going to run a light bulb, or do you need to use power tools? It is unlikely you are going to get much usable power from any wind system for less money than the $1,025 cost of running the wire out there.

I'll be using power tools too. I'd like to be able to run just about anything so I'll probably be using a 220 wire. Thanks!
