Will I have to replace the panel?

I was planning to add a circuit for a heater in my garage. The box is a Sylvania (c. 1980). It seems they don't make this breaker any more. The guy at the big box store said the only fix is to replace the whole circuit breaker panel. I've decided to postpone adding the circuit; but although I don't have any problems now, if a breaker ever fails will I need a whole new box, or is there an alternative?

Just google obsolete breaker suppliers. You should be able to find someone with the breaker you need.

sylvania = commander

breakers are still made, just installed a couple myself (brand new)
try a real electrical supplier rather than Big Orange

OR, you could install some "classified" breakers in that panel. I believe that Cutler-Hammer type CL breakers are available and are classified for use in most interchangeable panels.
