Whole-house generator: How close to house?

What does code say about installing an Natural Gas whole-house standby generator next to the house? In particular, what does code say about the generator's exhaust and, say, distance to windows?

Depends on your AHJ. Everyone's codes are different. Here the placement is no different than if you are placing a air conditioner unit for hvac outside the home/structure.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

The answer will varies a little depending on the Inspector say for the area where it will be used.

However a common sense that no exhaust ports will be near at the window ( most will spec minum of 3 feet )

For how far away from the house it will varies a bit but some states are saying it have to be minum 18 inches away ( this part you will have to check the inspector and manufacter speces for details )

The other thing it will get ya is the natural gaz piping size you may have to change it as well plus upsizeing the meter depending on what the gaz compaine have it setup now.

Merci,
Marc

Whole-house generator: How close to house?

This is a building code issue, not an electric code.

In VA your going to need a permit to install it anyway so ask them while your in there getting the permit.
You really should have the gas company do the gas hook up for you. Any gas company can also tell you where it needs to be. All there installers are required to have a code book in the service vehicle.
