Where to run the line...opinion wanted

Question: If somebody wants to run a new line to an attic (no pre-existing line exists), would it be better to run a new line across a basement to an opposite wall and up to the attic OR make a short run from the breaker box to and up the stack pipe into the attic?

The way it will be done (as advised now) will be 14-2 across the basement, up the wall to the attic and split from there.

The stack pipe is only 5 feet from the box and I honestly think a shorter run, given the 14-2, is a better and safer bet.

Any opinions?

What do you mean "up a stack pipe"? An abandoned waste pipe? Up the outside of an active waste pipe? Abandoned plumbing, while handy as he**, isn't really the best (by best I mean most compliant) way of getting a wire from A to B. Going to the wall can't amount to that much more wire, and if this is going to be inspected you may get gigged for the pipe=conduit method, because it doesn't.

If you mean outside the pipe, I don't see why not.

If you are talking about running the cable up the space beside the plumbing stack that is not a problem.
