Question

Where do you source your residential electrical wire?

Sort of an informal poll for those in any biz (or even DIY'er) using quantities of electrical wire normally found in a residential setting (NM, THHN, MC, etc.) Please list the type of wire, and where you source from.

I often use mineral insulated cables from the local electrical supply.

Big box store for boxes of NM. Electrical supply for cut lengths of THWN & SE(R). Also have bought on line and storage locker auctions.

Where do you source your residential electrical wire?

My supply houses are about as cheap as the big box stores. Not that I care, I use supply houses almost exclusively.

If we do not support them all we will have left are box stores selling us crap and at whatever price point they desire. And your local supply houses pay full taxes, usually treat their employees well and with full time status, and give something back to the community when asked. Employees know what they are selling too!

Box stores seem to have better prices on #14 and #12 NM. But it seems supply house beats them with cut wire. If I need any THHN and its bigger than #10, I get a quote from the supply house. In most every case they will beat the store. But only on individual wire like THHN and in sizes larger than #10.

I disagree on most of your points.
Supply houses sell crap to.
Box stores pay taxes the same as any other store.
Box stores while not having the most experienced employees, seem to take care of them.
I have never seen a supply house give anything away unless its a raffle type deal. Box stores are always donating materials to good causes.

There are some good things about supply houses.
Should you need a 1500 amp fuse at 2:00 am on Christmas morning, you might have it within two days. HD does not sell this fuse and the supply house has to order it..
And they can usually give you a better price on larger wire.
