What would happen if... Improper Generator installation ?

I sold a Honda generator to a gentleman who was going to use it @ home in case of emergency, like a power outage.

He asked me an interesting question that I didnt know the answer to.

He said that in the case of a power outage he was going to run a cord from the 220 recept on the generator to a 220 recept in his garage and backfeed the panel. I told him it would work but I didnt think it would be safe in the case where power was restored while the generator was running??

I'm not sure what would happen, fireworks?

NOT SAFE & ILLEGAL as far as I know
He would be backfeeding not only the house but the electric lines
And the transformer works both ways, stepping that small voltage up to higher voltage & possibly killing someone working on the wires

I forgot to mention that I told him if he had a main breaker in his panel to turn it off.

He wasnt sure.

Pretty much a bad idea and dangerous as you mentioned, in the case of re energizing the lines via the XFMR on the pole.

I've always been told it's illegal and unsafe-- even if you turn off the main breaker so that you don't feed the lines. I hope someone has something more official.

Still NG. Like Scuba Dave said. ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS! First thing you will need a TRANSFER SWITCH (Either Manual or Automatic). (ATS) to make certain that the power coming out of the emergency generator is NEVER fed back to the Utility lines!!!

I had a service call where a guy told me he hooked up his generator and forgot to turn his main off (This was about 8 years ago) power went out and he started the generator and then the power came back on It killed his generator and every Tv in his house (4 of them 1 bigscreen) And everthing that was low voltage (security system, cordless phones,And so on)Cost him alot to fix!! do it the right way, with a transfer switch. ...

In this state there is a $15,000 fine for doing just that plus you are held liable if a lineman gets hurt. You must have a transfer switch you can not just turn off the main breaker.

$15,000 fine here too. get a transfer switch or run extension cords off the generator to just what you want to run.

If I was not sure of the answer to a question like that, I would say to call the manufacturer and ask. I would explain that manufacturers design these things and know all about how they work and how they can be safely connected as well as dangerous situations to avoid.

In other words... Get it straight from the horse!

Also the cord he would need to use would have two male ends. It's called a suicide cord for a reason.

JV's got a solution there. Note that all it does is mechanically force you to shut off the main breaker in order for the breaker from the generator feed to go on.

please do not suggest a dangerous way of connecting a generator as "safe"
