Question

What is this thing????

Hey guys...new to the site. I was cleaning out the basement this weekend and came across this thing. Anyone know what it was for? It actually looks kinda cool...but also somewhat dangerous! lol

It does say Western Electric on it, so I was thinking it had something to do with the vintage crank phones??

No, it is a surge arrester for telephone lines. (lightning, overvoltage..) Nowadays, the same thing is accomplished with the gas filled arrestors inside a telephone company box (Demarc) outside. The modern ones are tiny compared to the old ones.

More info can be found here.

You're missing the carbon blocks that go in the center, under a cuplike thing (also missing).

I don't know. Yours is missing the little carbon pieces that slide in that center part. (these burnt which is probably why it was replaced in the first place) There is also no black bakelite cap that screws in to cover that portion. You might get a buck for it at a garage sale.

I just always keep stuff like that, even if it not worth anything. You could lay it on your desk and it would become a discussion piece....lol
