What Size Dimmer Switch

I want to add a dimmer on my four, 100 watt, ceiling lights. The dimmers come in 300, 600, 1000 watt sizes. Do I only need to add 100 * 4 = 400 and get the next watt size that covers it, in this case 600, or is there more to consider?

You size for the total wattage on the circuit, and add some for overhead, so that you do not burn out the dimmer.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

Also please note that if you have more than one dimmer in the same box you will need to derate the dimmer. The derated value is normally on the dimmer near the breakoff tabs.

modern dimmers are not resistance based, the are pulse width based. There should be very minimal heat production with them.
