What "Shocking" Things Did You Do With Electricity As A Kid?

Most electricians I've known throughout my career told of things they did as a kid that would have given their parents a heart attack. I have a few myself. But I suppose those kinds of "experiments" aren't limited to those who chose electrician as a career.

What did you do with electricity as a kid that "wasn't really a good idea"?

standard finger in the light socket and outlet.

then repeated to make sure what I felt was what I felt.

I'm super paranoid now about my kids and glad for gfci and tamper resistant stuff. but I still yell when I see them get close to anything resembling danger.

I wanted to hear what electricity sounded like. So I cut the plug off a transistor radio earphone, put it in my right ear, and stuck the wires into an outlet. Big pop, earphone remains fly across the room, breaker trips. Never did hear the electricity. Surprisingly, after more than 50 years, that's still my best ear.

found a microwave on the street, plugged it into a receptacle on an outdoor patio at my apartment building, turned it on and threw a pitcher of water into the ventilation openings on the back of the microwave. it danced around the patio, blocking the door back inside. was finally able to outmaneuver it and kick the cord out.

Does peeing on an electric fence count. Whew, you really don't want to try that.

Louie the lightning bug. Scared the crap out of me too.
It still pops into my mind occasionally when painting close to power lines.

I was 6 or 7. While in the basement I saw a brass curtain rod. Then I saw an extension cord.

I cut the outlet end off the cord and stripped the wires about 6" back then went upstairs into the living room and laid the extension cord on the carpet and plugged it into the wall receptacle.

Then I took the brass rod and rolled it over the extension cord, like you'd roll a bowling ball. When it rolled off the insulation, I saw beautiful sparks. So I did it again and again.

And the fuse never blew.

I was playing with/taking apart an old vacuum tube radio (unplugged of course --- I was perhaps dumb, but not stupid). For whatever reason, I decided I was going to remove a wire ---- don't exactly remember what I was going to do with it, but I stripped the insulation off the end. Being about 12 years old, my method of stripping the insulation was with my teeth. Wham!!! It tossed me across the room.
Wire was to the "heater" side of the vacuum tubes.
I later learned that the big thing on the end of that wire was called a capacitor, and it stored electricity.

What "Shocking" Things Did You Do With Electricity As A Kid?

I'm no electrician, but perhaps you might appreciate this story. When I was about 8 and my brother 10 (circa 1962), one morning at breakfast he invited me to check out something at the kitchen sink. For some reason the metal counter under the sink had a row of round cutouts that were big enough to stick your thumb in. He put his finger in one, then told me to hold on to a separate metal counter with one hand a few feet away, then took my other hand. We both got a good jolt. We did it a few times because it seemed like fun, until our parents decided they should see what we were laughing and screaming about. They figured out that the cord going to a kitchen clock mounted on the wall next to the frig had been partially cut by the frig pushing against it and the wall, and the frig was in contact with it, and the metal counter (and sink) were right up against the frig, so it all made a great circuit once we completed it. (I can't explain why it didn't just ground through the sink plumbing; all I can say is that's what happened when we did that.)

What "Shocking" Things Did You Do With Electricity As A Kid?

put my finger in a table lamp after my grandmother told me not to, i got a surprise. put wire in between the holes on a plug then plugged it into the wall, made a big kaboom, blackened the outlet, so my uncle came & replaced it before my dad got home from work. didn't tell him to about a year ago. that was aproxamitely 35 yrs ago. i laugh at it now, but it wasn't funny then!
