What happens when reclosers fail when you need them the most...

This all happened on August 23, 1988, Started at 10:35AM at
Moores Mill Road, Bel Air, Maryland

It was a 3 alarm response...A tree service cut a limb onto 33kv lines...this caused a series of events that led to almost 20kv being introduced into houses. Several house fires started.

What happens when reclosers fail when you need them the most...


I recall seeing a video of that in fire department training. What happened I remember was that utility people were working on switchgear at the time and had the breaker on the 33kv disabled so it wouldn't open. A recloser would reclose a tripped breaker to burn away a fault. The ones I 'm familiar with will reclose three times before locking out.
