What to do with a spare hot wire?

I pulled some old wiring from an old range hood we have, but now I have a spare hot wire because of this.

So I have 14-2-2 romex going to a light fixture in the kitchen then it was connected from the light fixture to the range hood using 14-2 cable. Is it ok to cap off the hot wire and be done with it or does it have to be connected to something?

Yes; best practice is to go as far back up the line as you can and cap the unused wire there.

Just make sure it's in a junction box not just laying out in the open.

yeah. in a junction box, and cap it off. then, if you ever decide to put something there. you already have the wire for it.

It is currently in a junction box of the light fixture. Dumb question, but since its an active cable it wound't it overheat the cap?

Current flow causes heat and since there is no current flow there will be no heat build up.
