Watts to Amp

This is sort of a residential question. House has been converted to a theatre. I have been asked to relocate the lighting dimmer packs. Each pack is on a separate 50 amp breaker. I did some quick math and am now becoming worried.

These dimmer packs are 6 channels capable of 2400 watts per channel. If I do the math the entire pack is capable of 14,400 watts. If my calculations are correct, these should each be on an 80amp breaker.

14,400 watts / 240 v = 60 amps. Using the 80% rule, 60amps is 80% of 75, therefore the breakers whould be 80amp (double pole 40amp)

Just need someone to validate my thought processes here.

Thanks!

Watts to Amp

If the house has been converted to a theater than this is not a residential question. Actually it apears to be a general electrical question.

I agree with your math and this should be an 80 amp circuit. But, a two pole 40 amp breaker is not 80 amps it is 40 amps at 240 volts.
You need a two pole 80 amp and no 4 copper wire.

Perfect, thanks! Thanks also for correcting my terminology. I did mean a two pole 80 amp.
