Want to Upgrade to 200 Amp - Know nothing, please help

Hi,

I bought my first house recently which has almost entirely knob and tube wiring to a 60 amp fuse box. I will be renting the upstairs of my house and want to have appropriate power.

I want to put in a 200 amp panel and try to rewire most of the outlets.

Now, I know nothing about this and want to make sure I don't get screwed if I hire an electrician. I was thinking of hiring for the new service, and then pulling wires myself, which I can do.

Can I save any money if I buy the 200 amp panel myself?

Is it possible to keep using the knob and tub wiring on the new 200 amp panel (and benefit from the 200 amps)? If so I wouldn't have to rewire quite so urgently.

Thanks all.

You probably won't save money buying the panel yourself. Some electrcians won't work that way and they get discounts at the supplier so they can sell it to you for the same price you would pay anyway.

The k&t can be connected to your new panel.
You can rewire the rest later.
