Want to change a single 240 volt circuit with only one outlet, to a 120 volt circuit with a standard 120 volt outlet.

Want to change a circuit that provided one outlet for a dryer and tested at 240 volts... to a standard 120 volt circuit (the circuit is only one wire run from breaker box to outlet).

The one wire run (is an older shielded two wire 10 gauge) runs from breaker box - where the black is connected to a 30 amp breaker and the white is connected to a 30 amp breaker (both breaker switches are clamped together so the breakers on/off together).

There is a bare copper wire that now attaches to the 240 outlet and then to a bare copper wire run that goes in between all the outlets (both 240 and 120 volt) and then into a bare wire that runs into the circuit box. The whole house (built 1957) is wired this way... 12/2 wire with bare copper externally connecting all the circuits to the breaker ground.

Only outlet for this circuit is located on wall in garage... the same location that I am building a recessed wall for kitchen refrigerator. The changed 120 volt circuit will be wired for the refigerator since the wire will drop perfectly down to outlet height within new wall. --- There is only this one outlet on the entire line (circuit).

MORE - Asking for feedback before I do what I assume is correct: Take off white wire on circuit breaker, attach to common bar in breaker box. Use existing 30 amp circuit breaker (with black wire) to downgrade to a 120 volt circuit for the outlet - will test wiring before installation of outlet...

Replace the 30 amp breaker with a 20 amp breaker!

Also if you are only using it for the fridge put in a 20 amp single receptacle. if you are going to use it as general purpose it needs to be a gfci outlet as per code. You are also going to want to splice #12 thhn to the #10 wire to make it easier to connect to the outlet.
