Wall box for bathroom vanity light
I am trying to replace the ugly chrome fixtures in my master bath
with something similar to this:

There is no box in the wall behind the existing light, just a hole in the sheetrock that they pulled the wires through and hooked up. There is a big support bracket that is screwed to the wall with drywall anchors. One of the boxes is centered directly over a stud, so I installed a 1/2" pancake box mounted directly to the stud. The other box will fall between studs. I'd rather not use one of these romex old work round wall boxes, since they don't appear to be able to support more that 6 lbs (the new fixture is right at 6 lbs). I don't think one of the smart boxes will work either, the box will be too far away from either stud.

Can one of these ceiling boxes with the adjustable bar hanger in a wall? I've looked at the spec sheets for the steel city and the arlington hangars, but neither mention use in a wall. This is the type of box I am referring to:

That box in the lower picture will do the job---good choice--

One of these would be simpler to install and you would have to make such a big hole in the wall.

That would be easier, but can that box support a 7lb fixture?

You don't need something as beefy as what is pictured in the OP. those are rated for ceiling fans. They make round plastic boxes with a simple brace that would do the job at 1/10th the cost. (if the wiring is something other than romex, the also make metal boxes with braces that are much cheaper as well.)

I like your ugly chrome fixture. :thumbup1:

I got 3 of them, make an offer

Seriously though, it's half the looks, half the halogen bulb that they use. They are approximately the same brightness and temperature of the sun.

I slimmed thru your first post an. Didn't realize the drywall is up. They make a round plastic cut in box specifically for mounting fixtures.
