If the new fixture requires a box you will need to install an old work box.

This is a very easy project. The hard part is getting the correct box and making sure it will fit in the wall.

What is the wall - just drywall? Is there just a small hole with the wires sticking through - and maybe a metal bracket screwed to the wall that the old light mounted on?

You need an old work box - these have ears that can be extended once the box is set into a appropriate sized hole in the wall. You need to open a larger hole in the wall - with something like a keyhole saw or drywall saw.

If you go to a big box store, they will be a few differing types of old work boxes.
