Tying in wiring to existing ceiling light

I would like to add another ceiling light in my kitchen.

And to keep it simple, I would just like to tie-in to the existing halogen ceiling light and have both the new light and old light controlled by the existing wall dimmer switch.

Is this do-able, I remember reading somewhere that you should not tie-in to a ceiling light if t is controlled by switch.

Is this easy to do or will there be problems? Is there a better way that I should be doing this?

I don't really want to have to run a completely new power line for this new ceiling light and then have to also add another wall switch to operate it, if you know what I mean.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

As long as you can fish a cable into the existing junction box you can add your fixture off the same switch, and there is enough capacity in the circuit.

Go for it. It's easy and perfectly fine. Just jump from the existing to the new box. You need a junction box mounted securely to the framing members above the ceiling. They make special boxes just for this purpose. They have arms that extend so the box can be mounted anywhere.

Just wanted to say thank you to those who responded to my question, the feedback was helpful, and does confirm my original belief that this should not be to complicated as long as the existing box has the room and capacity to run a new line to the new ceiling light box.
