Tripped breaker installing new light switch?

Hi all first time poster here. Ok Im changing all of my recepticales and light switches in my older home and have change most with out any touble but now I have a switch with 2 black wires and no ground that is causing me trouble. I fliped the breaker off and changed the switch (only two black wires so didn't mess it up) and flipped the breaker back on. It instantly tripped of and some black smoke came out. I thought it was the switch so I put another new one on and fliped the breaker on. This time in stayed on but the light wont turn on. I have a power tester and the switch seems to have power but the light doesn't. I put the old switch back in and its the same. Please help.

My guess is that this has nothing to do with the switch or wiring in this box, but with something done elsewhere. What device does this switch control? Is it possible that this device was changed, accidentally or otherwise?

nope you know what Im an idiot I must have scrapped a piece of the wire causing it to be bare and when I jamed the switch back in in tripped then when I pulled it out I must have pulled it apart. I just cut the wire where it stripped and put a mar on it and light is working fine. Thanks though
