track light stopped working

We have a low voltage track system that was installed 3 years ago and worked fine until yesterday when it just won't turn on. We have used a tester to make sure the wires in the switch are still hot. And, tested the rail and wires the 3 pendants hang from and they are still hot too. Tried replacing one of the bulbs, and still no light. What could be the problem?

tested the rail and wires 120V? 12V?

does each head have it's own transformer?

One transformer converts 120v down to 20v for all three pendants.

How did you test the rail?

with the same tester we used on the wires. One of those that lights up when you touch it to the wire. It is not a voltage meter.

I highly doubt you are getting a true reading. If all three lights went out at the same time, I'm betting the transformer went bad. You can either buy a multimeter and get an actual voltage reading, or just buy a new fixture.

Possibly, but you might have to order it from the manufacturer of the fixture.

It's an Alfa fixture and I understand they have gone out of business. Do you think the transformer may be available from another source?

Technically you would need the exact same transformer that the fixture currently has or you will void the UL listing.

Alfa was a sub-brand of Juno Lighting Group. You could contact them and very possibly get a replacement transformer. But, if you aren't particularly attached to the fixture, you might as well take this as an opportunity to go get something you like.

Trouble shooting low voltage "custom" rail fixture is easier that trying to thread a needle in an isolation tank with 20 oz boxing gloves on.
Take a photo of it and show dinner guests - under the light of a line voltage chandelier - what you used to have.
By the way, its the transformer...and you can always get a replacement. Just give the primary, and secondary voltages, along with the rated wattage required by all three lamps...(plus say 15 to 25% extra).

Kontoose.

PS. Its made in China - (the country - not the porcelain equivalent, that is).
