Tore Romex Sheathing Under a Staple....replace the whole wire?

I am rewiring my second floor and I'm using big metal staples to secure the wire to the side of joists in the attic. It is the type of staple that you hammer in and it has a little plastic piece that is supposed to protect the wire from getting cut by the metal staple. I had to remove one and in the process I tore a small hole in the yellow sheath of the romex 12-2 cable. It did not damage the internal wires. Do I need to replace the whole section of cable or can I just tape it up?

No, electrical tape is a perfectly fine repair for this. Just make sure you cover the nicked ares with several smooth wraps.

That is a load off of my chest. That wire was tough to fish up through the wall.

It's always easier the second time. You already have a pull line (the bad NM) to use to pull in the new NM.

Nap, you'd replace a whole home run for a small tear in the sheathing?

no no no, didn't mean to infer that. Merely commenting on the OP's lack of being thrilled if he did have to replace it.

Nope, as long as the actual insulation on the wire wasn't damaged, a little 33+ and he is good to go.
