My grandfather used to solder wires but wiring methods in the 30's were a bit different than today.

sorry...hit submit before finishing the post. The above pic was an example of the electrical nightmare I ripped out of my house during a re-build. I saved it to show my inspector....he said he hadn't seen anything that bad in quite some time.

LOL is it even possible to hook up those two type of boxes together the way those are, or is that jury rigged? lol

bigN8...no, it doesn't currently look like that. That was just one example of the "before". In our project I had every wall opened up, re-wired 90% of the house and the other 10% I was able to see and verify it was ok. Everything permited / inspected / passed to the 2005 NEC.

Theoretically, I believe it is legal. It's both, jury-rigged and workable. Some 1900 boxes have a template/knockout the size and shape of a (jamb) box in the back. (No matter what) Don't Drink and Drive, Ever!!!

I'd be curious as to how many (and types of) wires were in that box & if it was even close to code for box fill
