Timer enclosure as a junction box?
I have a landscape lighting system that I am reworking to eliminate a mechanical timer and install an digital timer. The circuit runs from the breaker panel to a mechanical timer* in a metal enclosure to the receptacle that the lighting transformer is plugged into. This will give me constant power at the receptacle which is my goal. Since the wiring is in conduit it will be hard (or impossible without replacing the existing wiring) to replace the timer enclosure with a standard junction box.

* Like this one but mine is rated at 20 amps

I would like to pull the guts out of the metal timer enclosure and wire nut the input and output cables together and use this as a junction box. Question is : Is it code complliant to use the timer's metal case as a junction box?

Leave the guts in and make the connection.
