Timer in closet

We just purchased a house with a timer in the hall closet. It turns the fan on in the bathroom (about 5 feet away) twice a day. There is no ventilation duct in the closet so, we're wondering why? What is it's purpose? and most importantly, how do we shut it off?

The second picture is another item in this same closet but I think it is a transformer for the door bell?

Anyone have experience with this? Thank you.

Doesn't the fan go off on it's own after a few minutes?
Leave it alone.

Someone got tired of a smelly and/moldy bathroom.
Apparently they couldn't rely on others to use the fan as they created the smell or moisture
