Three way switch trouble

I have lighting on my stairs with a switch to control them at the top and the bottom. The switches were working fine but the switch at the bottom suddenly stopped working. The switch at the top will still turn the lights on and off but the switch at the bottom has no effect. The only thing I've noticed is that if the lights are on and the switch at the bottom is put into the position between up and down the lights will go out. I tried replacing the switch at the bottom with a new 3 way switch. In both boxes there is a ground, red, white, and black wire. With both switches removed the only hot wire is the black at the bottom. I attached this the common terminal of the new switch, the ground to ground, and the red and white each to a traveller. I then went upstairs and only the white wire was hot. I flipped the downstairs switch and checked again upstairs but the white wire remains hot. I am out of ideas any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you replace a bad switch with a bad switch.
