Three way switch to single?

Hello, I recently bought an old home with several light fixtures missing. I successfully installed one fixture (it came on) then then found that the switch in the room would not turn it off.

Upon opening up the switch I found two white wires capped off with wire nut and two black and one red wire connected loosely to the old switch. This seems to be the configuration for a three way switch but I cannot for the life of me figure out why there would be one in this room. I tried capping off the red and connecting the two black (one hot and one not) to the new single on/off switch and nothing happened. I would love to know how to fix this switch.

Thanks!

Tell us about the hold switch. Did it have two or three wire connections? Where both blacks connected to the same terminal?
How many wires in the fixture? Was there a red wire? If there was then probably you should have connected the fixture to white and red.

The old switch had four push in connections - with two black wires connected on one side and one red on the other.

I just checked and the fixture does have a single red wire which has been taped off and white and black wires of course. I had previously connected white and black to fixture.

THanks joe!

I would say the two blacks connect together and to one terminal on the switch. The red connects to the other terminal.
The fixture connects to the whites and the red.

Three way switch to single?

Thanks Joe,

I will try this method - but I don't know what to do with black in ceiling. Should this just be capped off?

Thanks,

Alison

There will be one extra wire in the first light that you just cap off. Cap it off in the other junction box where the switch used to be as well. That old switch junction box can not be buried in the wall either. You must leave it accessible with a blank cover plate.
