Three way light
I have replaced a light fixture on a three way switch. I have 3black wires and 3white wires coming from the ceiling box. Only 2of these wires are hot. The light will come on but the switches do not work. Please help.
You only needed to connect the new fixture to the same wires as the old fixture. There was no need to change any other connections.
Now you will need to find out what each cable does and re-make the proper splices. With the switch not operating the fixture you have spliced to a constant hot, not a switched hot.
Should be a 3-way sub-forum here.
In the diagrams below, the wiring depends on where the power enters the circuit(either at the light source or at the switch).
See which arrangement is similar to yours and identify the purpose of your wires.
Ground wires not shown for ease of drawing.
There are a lot of threads on here concerning 3-way switches depending on which location power comes into and then how cable is routed to the load and the other switch. Below are some common simpler arrangements:
diagram 1 is power into a switch then load-switch
diagram 2 is power into a switch then switch-load
diagram 3 is power into the load where the switches are after the load
diagram 4 is power into the load where the switches are between the load
How old is the house?
