I recently purchased an old house that is missing several overhead light fixtures. I am working on a ceiling box with two white, two black, and a single red wire. The wall switch box has the same configuration. I tried ignoring the red wire and the light worked but could not be turned off with the switch. (photos attached, also the old switch)
I am pretty sure that this is not a three-way because there are no other switches in the area. Could this be a dimmer switch configuration?
I would love to know how to wire my light for a regular on/off switch.
Does the switch control anything? receptacle? other light?
I suspect what you need to do is connect the light to the red and white. Connect the blacks together at the light.
Connect the blacks together at the switch with a pigtail and connect the pigtail to one terminal of the switch. Connect the red to other switch terminal.
